Top 6 Island Destinations to Travel to in 2018

With the start of a New Year just a few days away now is the perfect time to start planning where your next adventure shall lie. Whether you looking for adventure, romance, cultural experiences or perhaps just a chance to recharge after a busy 2017, island destinations offer something for every type of traveler. To help you narrow down your list we've rounded up some of our top island destinations to spend your vacation days in 2018.

#1 Grenada

With over 40 beaches and countless hidden coves, endless nature trails, breathtaking mountains and rain forests it's no wonder why the island of Grenada made it on our list as a top island destination to explore in 2018. The largest of three islands in the nation of Grenada, Grenada has a population of just over 100,000 and has seen healthy growth in tourism and boasts a variety of hotels and resorts to choose from.

Our insider tip...spend a little extra time while you are there and tack on a day trip or an overnight stay in one or both of the other islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which both boast their own stunning (and very secluded) beaches, sailing trips, diving excursions and colorful snorkeling adventures..

#2 Kauai

Like most you have probably heard of, and very likely traveled to, the Hawaiian Islands. But what many of you have likely not experienced is Kauai, the fourth largest and oldest island in the chain. Known for it's steep mountains, lush green rainforests and breathtaking waterfalls - much of this island are only accessible by air or sea which is why exploring it is that much more exciting.

Ideal for travelers who are looking to experience outdoor activities and explore remote places the destination boasts amazing hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, zipline adventures and horseback riding. It's also great for those looking for a laid back environment and taking time to recharge with many resorts offering amazing wellness treatments, yoga retreats and ways to truly disconnect.

#3 Vanua Levu

Known to the locals as "the other big island" Vanua Levu is the second largest island in the Fiji Islands and is just a short flight away from the main airport located in Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu. Trust us when we tell you that this island is worth the extra travel time as it will take you out to some of the most secluded beaches, lush rainforests, hidden waterfalls and some of the most spectacular resorts. Best of all though, is that much of this island is still untouched by modern day ways of life, meaning that you'll get to experience what life is truly like for the locals and see why they are some of the happiest people on earth.

Insider tip...since this island is so large depending on where you say the landscape, beaches and people can be entirely different. So we suggest that you book your stay for a few nights at one resort on the island, and then finish your stay at another resort on a separate part of the island - that way you'll get to experience all that the destination has to offer.

#4 Aitutaki

If you are a beach or water baby then the island of Aitutaki is the ultimate destination for you. Located in the Cook Islands, Aitutaki  is made up of the main island, a striking turquoise lagoon and a surrounding barrier reef which means that you will get to experience all sorts of marine life, including turtles, rays and the unique bonefish. This island destination is definitely not for travelers looking for hustle and bustle and night life - but more so for those looking to get away from it all, truly relax and to unwind with the sound of the crashing waves.

Insider tip... take a boat to the small ,uninhabited islands, called motu, where you will experience on of the most beautiful white sand beaches that you have ever seen.

#5 Huahine

The one word that we would use to define Huahine is enchanting. Located in the Islands of French Polynesia, and a short 40-minute flight from the well knows island of Tahiti, Huahine is a place where you can truly experience living like a local. With lush, and in many cases untamed landscape, sparkling and crystal clear lagoons, white-sand beaches and small villages it's easy to see why this island is known as 'Tahiti's best-kept secret.'

One of our favorite things is that this island has somehow remained predominantly unchanged by the modern world in which we live and will provide you with a chance to experience a slower pace of life and to appreciate the little things just a bit more. Not to worry though, there is still plenty to do with activities including diving, snorkeling, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring archaeological sites you are sure to stay busy!

Insider tip...take time to immerse yourself in the local culture, visit the local villages, speak with the locals and try the food. Trust us you will not be disappointed!

#6 New Zealand

Last, but certainly not least, is New Zealand - which is not only on our list for 2018, but also on our list of places to travel before you die.

It's a remarkable destination and offers some of the most spectacular sights that you have ever seen ranging from sweeping city landscapes, snow covered mountain tops, majestic lakes, glaciers, hot springs and volcanos it's truly unlike any other place on earth. What we love most about this destination is it's diversity - which makes it perfect for people traveling together that may have different interests or who want to experience a little bit of everything during their stay.

No matter where you choose to travel in 2018 - we hope that you do one simple thing - which is to travel! It's such an important, rewarding and memorable thing to do for yourself and with loved ones. It's a way to reward yourself for all the hard work you put in day after day and more importantly a way to enrich your life with new experiences.
